Bolinho de Carne are Brazilian-style fried meat patties, and this version pairs seasoned minced beef with sweet plantain for a satisfying contrast of flavors. The crispy fried coating comes together quickly, making these a solid weeknight option when you want something a little different on the table in under 30 minutes.
Heat a large pan over medium-high heat and add the minced beef. Cook for about 5 minutes until browned. Remove from the heat.
In the same pan, add a tablespoon of the vegetable oil and sauté the onions until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
Stir in the diced plantains, letting them cook until lightly golden and soft, approximately 5 minutes.
Return the beef to the pan and mix everything together. Add the parsley, cumin, salt, and pepper. Let it cool slightly before forming into balls.
Shape the beef and plantain mixture into small balls, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each bolinho in breadcrumbs to coat evenly.
In a large, deep skillet, heat the remaining vegetable oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry the bolinhos in batches, being careful not to crowd the pan, until they're crisp and golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels.
Notes
For a healthier version, you can bake the bolinhos at 200°C (400°F) for about 15 minutes, turning halfway through.
